Children need opportunities to be awkward, uncertain, and unfinished without feeling that every attempt is being judged. In a world where so much can be posted, compared, ranked, and counted, private and unevaluated spaces are becoming increasingly important. They give young people room to practice, experiment, change direction, and develop a sense of self before they are asked to perform.
